You do not need a car to enjoy a short break in Stratford-upon-Avon. There are two picturesque walks from Heritage Mews taking you into the town centre. You can walk into town past Holy Trinity Church and along the riverside footpath, or along Southern Lane, past an old pedestrian chain ferry - the last of its kind in Britain. Stop off to take in the atmosphere at the celebrated Dirty Duck inn, with river views from the terrace and inside, walls of signed photographs of Royal Shakespeare Company actors, past and present. Continue along the path to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and Bancroft Gardens. Enjoy an Italian coffee on the waterfront at Cox's Yard or head up Bridge Street into town.

Or to enjoy Stratford's varied and beautiful architecture, walk into town along Old Town, past Hall's Croft (Shakespeare's daughter's home)and down Church Street, passing many fine half-timbered buildings, including the alms houses, Guildhall (where Shakespeare is believed to have attended school) and the Garrick, Stratford's oldest inn.

Visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace and two other beautifully preserved Shakespeare Houses and Gardens in the town centre - open every day. Take a City Sightseeing Bus Tour - the bus stops outside Hall’s Croft, about 3 minutes' walk from the cottage. The bus tours the town centre sites and nearby villages, including a visit to Anne Hathaway's Cottage in Shottery and from 18 March to 27 October 2013, Mary Arden's Farm in Wilmcote (closed in winter).

Visit Shakespeare’s grave in Holy Trinity Church, one of England’s most beautiful parish churches situated on the banks of the River Avon. You can see the spire from the cottage – just two or three minutes walk.
